Business-to-business coaching

AMULET supported SMEs in developing solutions in the field of advanced materials and lightweight technology by offering a coaching service for deepening the knowledge and skills for favouring the growth of ideas and solutions.

During the project, the AMULET coaches have met directly with the European SMEs in one-to-one meetings and discussions for more than 280 hours, covering a wide range of topics. Overall, more than 20 expert coaches have been available for SMEs all around Europe to have support in technical topics and business-related themes.

In the rapidly evolving field of lightweight materials and technologies, SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) often face significant challenges in navigating complex technical and business landscapes. However, through specialized coaching and support, these companies can unlock new opportunities, develop innovative solutions, and access the right funding to fuel their growth.

A series of targeted coaching activities in lightweight materials has been carried out to help SMEs optimize their operations and improve their competitiveness. These coaching sessions have focused on various aspects of technology, business strategy, and funding acquisition, ensuring that companies are equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in the industry.

1. Market Analysis and Business Planning for Feasibility Studies

One of the critical areas of support involves helping SMEs assess market potential and refine their business strategies. In particular, detailed market analysis and business planning for feasibility studies have been instrumental in guiding SMEs through the process of evaluating the viability of new technologies and solutions. This support provides valuable insights into market trends, competition, and consumer demand, enabling businesses to make informed decisions about product development and market entry.

2. Advanced Material Characterization and Testing

Technical coaching plays a vital role in the development of high-performance materials. Through hands-on support, SMEs have been assisted in carrying out advanced material characterization, including experimental work on ceramic matrix composites. This has included conducting tests such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, thermal conductivity testing, and the examination of compressive strength and foaming behavior in materials like foamed glass. Such tests are crucial for determining the physical properties and performance of materials, ensuring they meet the necessary standards for industrial applications.

3. Navigating the EU Funding Landscape

Access to funding is often one of the most significant obstacles for SMEs looking to scale their operations. To address this challenge, coaching has been provided on how to navigate the European Union’s funding programs, including preparing applications for cascade funding opportunities. These sessions cover the process of writing proposals, understanding eligibility criteria, and aligning project goals with the objectives of EU-funded programs. SMEs are also guided on how to use funding to accelerate technological development and drive innovation within their organizations.

4. Innovation and Circular Economy Projects

Innovation is at the heart of the transition to sustainable manufacturing, and SMEs are increasingly being encouraged to develop technologies that contribute to the circular economy. Coaching on circular economy projects has included supporting SMEs in identifying viable applications for recyclable and sustainable materials, as well as guiding them through the process of preparing proposals for EU-funded calls related to the green transition. This support enables SMEs to contribute to environmental sustainability while enhancing their product offerings and business models.

5. Product Development and Technical Support

In addition to strategic planning and financial support, SMEs also require ongoing technical assistance to improve their products and processes. Coaching sessions have focused on supporting businesses in testing, manufacturing, and analyzing their products to ensure optimal performance. This includes advising on specific technical challenges, such as the development of lightweight composites, bonding technologies, and other advanced materials designed to meet the demands of various industries.

6. Fostering Collaboration and Partnerships

A key element of success in the lightweight materials sector lies in building strong collaborations and partnerships. SMEs have been coached on how to engage in networking opportunities and form alliances with other industry players. This has been particularly beneficial in the context of European cluster initiatives, which foster cross-border cooperation and enable SMEs to tap into a wider network of expertise, resources, and market opportunities.

7. Advising on Emerging Technologies

SMEs involved in advanced materials are constantly exploring the potential of emerging technologies. Coaching has provided guidance on assessing the potential of new materials and technologies, including those used in sectors like prosthetics and hydrogen storage. By evaluating the commercial and technical feasibility of such innovations, SMEs are better positioned to make strategic decisions and invest in the development of groundbreaking solutions.

Conclusion

The coaching activities have proven invaluable in helping SMEs in the lightweight materials sector address critical challenges and capitalize on new opportunities. By providing tailored support in areas such as market analysis, material testing, funding applications, and innovation strategy, SMEs are better equipped to navigate the complexities of the modern manufacturing landscape. These efforts not only contribute to the growth and competitiveness of individual businesses but also help advance the broader transition toward a more sustainable and efficient industrial ecosystem
