RecuMgased

Recuperation of Mg-based wastes in new materials

Sustainable building materials based on the incorporation of industrial by-products to reduce the consumption of raw materials.

The project RecuMgased focuses on the valorisation of two magnesium-based residues. On one hand, a Magnesium oxide by-product obtained during the industrial calcination process of magnesite. On the other hand, a refractory ceramic residue from steel industry. Each partner of the consortium has studied different applications for the development of the project:

Application in ceramic materials (Innovarcilla): The main aim was to employ the refractory ceramic residue as a degreaser in clay mixtures. Adding this residue may reduce the amount of virgin raw material used and the water consumption, improving the drying process and saving energy in the kiln.Application in mortars (CIAC): For this application, the Magnesium oxide by-product was selected to develop special mortars based on MgO and MgCl2, as this residue offers a great cementing capacity without any previous treatment, a fact that will represent a significant energy saving.
